Both islands have genuine surf credentials, but they’re quite different experiences, and the right choice depends a lot on what kind of surfer you are and what kind of trip you want.

The waves: consistency vs variety
Fuerteventura is often called the surf capital of the Canary Islands, and for good reason. The island has a long coastline with numerous breaks, from beginner beach breaks to world-class reef waves. The variety is impressive, and serious surfers can spend weeks exploring different spots.
Lanzarote is more focused. La playa de Famara on the northwest coast picks up Atlantic swell with remarkable consistency and offers conditions for every level in one place. What Lanzarote lacks in variety it makes up for in reliability, Famara almost always has something rideable, whatever the season.
For beginners, Lanzarote has an advantage. The whitewater at la playa de Famara is predictable and forgiving in a way that makes learning faster and more enjoyable.
The atmosphere: surf culture vs resort island
Fuerteventura has built a significant surf tourism industry. There are surf camps, surf hotels, and surf shops everywhere, particularly around Corralejo in the north. This makes logistics easy but it also means the island can feel quite commercialised in peak season.
Lanzarote is different. Caleta de Famara is a small fishing village that has absorbed surf culture without being consumed by it. There are no surf resorts, no package deals, no rows of identical surf schools. What you get instead is a more authentic, quieter experience, the kind that stays with you.
Getting there and getting around
The rest of the island
Lanzarote has a distinct character that sets it apart from most holiday destinations, the volcanic landscape of Timanfaya, the art of César Manrique, the wine region of La Geria. If surfing is your main focus but you want the rest of your days to offer something more than beach bars and tourist restaurants, Lanzarote is the stronger choice.
Fuerteventura has beautiful beaches and a more relaxed pace, but the interior of the island is largely flat and arid. It’s an island that works best if you’re there primarily for the ocean.
Which island is right for you?
If you’re a beginner or intermediate surfer who wants consistent waves, a genuine local atmosphere, and an island with more to offer beyond surfing, Lanzarote and la playa de Famara is the better choice.
If you’re an experienced surfer who wants to explore multiple breaks and doesn’t mind a more touristy setting, Fuerteventura has more variety.
Either way, the Canary Islands will deliver. But if you’re coming to learn, come to Famara.
