Things to do in Lanzarote

Why surf lessons should be top of your list

Lanzarote has volcanic landscapes, stunning beaches, and some of the best weather in Europe. But if you’re looking for something to do that you’ll actually remember, something beyond sunbeds and sangria, surf lessons at Famara Beach should be at the top of your list.

Here’s why.

The best things to do in Lanzarote involve the Atlantic

The ocean is everywhere on this island. It shapes the landscape, the culture, and the energy of the place. Ignoring it while you’re here feels like going to Florence and skipping the art.

Famara Beach sits on the northwest coast, wild, wide, and facing the open Atlantic. The waves here are consistent, the cliffs behind the beach are dramatic, and the village of Caleta de Famara has kept the kind of authentic, unhurried atmosphere that most of Lanzarote lost to tourism years ago.

A surf lesson here isn’t just an activity. It’s an experience of the island at its most real.

Why surf lessons in Lanzarote are perfect for non-surfers

You don’t need experience. You don’t need to be fit. You don’t need to be young.

At Kalufa Surf School, we’ve taught complete beginners from eight to sixty-five years old. Our instructors know Famara’s waves better than anyone, and they know exactly how to get a first-timer standing on a board, usually within the first hour.

Everything is included: wetsuit, board, leash, and all the instruction. You show up, we take care of the rest.

A day at Famara Beach: more than just a surf lesson in Lanzarote

After your lesson, stay a while. Grab lunch at one of the small restaurants in Caleta de Famara with your feet still sandy. Watch the afternoon light hit the cliffs. Walk the beach.

Famara has a way of slowing things down. Most people who come for a surf lesson end up staying longer than they planned, and booking another one before they leave.

How to add surf lessons to your Lanzarote itinerary

Famara is about 45 minutes from the south of the island, an easy drive that’s worth every minute. We recommend morning sessions when the wind is calm and the waves are at their best.

Book in advance in summer. Famara is becoming more popular every year, and spaces fill up quickly.
