What age can kids start surfing at Famara beach
At Kalufa Surf School, children can start from around 7 years old. At this age most kids have enough body coordination and the ability to follow instructions in the water. Younger children can sometimes join with a parent present, depending on their confidence in the water.

There is no upper age limit. We teach families together regularly, which means parents and children can share the same lesson and the same first wave.
Why children learn to surf faster than adults
Kids have a natural advantage in the water. They are lighter, lower to the ground, and tend to throw themselves into new experiences without overthinking. The pop-up that adults practise repeatedly on the sand often clicks for children within minutes once they are in the water.
They also fall without fear, which in surfing is actually a skill. Getting comfortable with falling and coming back up is half the battle, and children handle it with a ease that most adults take a few sessions to match.
Is Famara safe for children
The sections of Famara Beach used for beginner and children’s lessons are calm, sandy, and shallow. Instructors stay close at all times and group sizes are kept small so every child gets proper attention.
Children are provided with a correctly sized wetsuit and a large foam board designed for stability. The whitewater zone where lessons take place has no rocks and no strong currents. Parents are welcome to watch from the beach.
What to bring for your child's surf lesson
A swimsuit worn under the wetsuit, sunscreen applied before getting dressed, a snack and water for after the session, and a change of clothes. Everything else, wetsuit, board and leash, is provided by Kalufa.
One practical tip: apply sunscreen generously to the face and the back of the neck. These areas are most exposed during a surf lesson and easy to forget in the excitement of getting ready.
