What to wear for your surf lesson at Famara beach
It’s one of those questions that sounds simple but causes more confusion than it should. What do you actually wear to a surf lesson if you’ve never done one before?

The good news: it’s simpler than you think, and most of what you need is already provided.
What Kalufa provides for every lesson at Famara
Every surf lesson at Kalufa Surf School includes a full wetsuit, a foam surfboard, and a leash. You don’t need to own any equipment or rent anything separately. Just show up.
The wetsuit is the most important piece of gear in the water. It keeps you warm, protects your skin from the board, and adds a small amount of buoyancy. Your instructor will help you choose the right thickness based on the season and water temperature on the day.
What to wear underneath your wetsuit at Famara Beach
Under your wetsuit, wear a swimsuit or a rash guard. That’s it. For women, a one-piece swimsuit or bikini both work fine. For men, boardshorts or swim trunks. If you have a rash guard, it adds a layer between your skin and the neoprene which some people find more comfortable, especially on longer sessions.
Avoid wearing cotton underwear or regular clothes under a wetsuit. Cotton holds water, gets heavy, and makes the whole experience uncomfortable.
Sunscreen before you get dressed
This is the step most people skip and later regret. Apply sunscreen before putting on your wetsuit, not after. Your face, the back of your neck, and any skin that will be exposed once you’re in the water. The Lanzarote sun is strong even on overcast days, and the water reflects it directly back at you.
A water-resistant SPF 50 is ideal. Bring it with you and reapply after the session too.
What to bring to the beach
A towel and a change of clothes for after the lesson. Water and a snack for when you come out of the ocean hungry. Flip flops or sandals are useful since the walk across the sand to the water can get hot in summer.
Leave anything valuable at your accommodation. There are no lockers at the beach and you won’t want to be thinking about your phone or wallet while you’re in the water.
What not to wear
Jewellery comes off before a surf lesson. Rings, earrings, necklaces and watches can all cause injuries in the water, either from the board or from a fall. Most instructors will ask you to remove them before entering the water anyway.
Glasses and contact lenses are also better left off for the lesson. If you wear prescription lenses and visibility is an issue, mention it to your instructor beforehand.
One last thing: arrive already dressed if you can
If you can put your swimsuit on before you arrive at the beach, it saves time and means you’re in the water sooner. Your instructor will help you get into your wetsuit on arrival and check that everything fits correctly before the lesson starts.
